Welcome to the Journey

Welcome to our blog, documenting the triumphs and challenges as we set out on a quest to live more self sufficiently by using the resources around us. My name is Justin and I am an undergraduate student studying geology at Tarleton State University. My girlfriend Lyndsey is also a geology major, but has major interests in horticulture. Together we live in a small house with a small but very fertile yard.
I am the hunter and carbohydrate farmer of the two. Potatoes, Corn, and Onions are my domain in farming, but I will also try my hand with my favorite grain, Quinoa, this season. Although I have hunted deer, rabbits, and hogs in the past, I plan on taking advantage of every bag limit I can through this year. This involves me learning as much as I can about waterfowl, doves, snipes, turkey, and the shotguns used to hunt them. We have found a second hand deep freezer which will be used to store this meat as it comes for use throughout the year.
Lyndsey is the fisher and the vegetable farmer. After getting some basic fishing gear, she will be teaching me to fish more effectively. This should provide us with additional protein, but also a good deal of nutrients such as fatty acids that our diet will require. I also will be assisting her in farming a large assortment of vegetables which she has experience growing with her parents along with some new heirlooms which I will discuss in a coming post.
As we grow and adjust to this new lifestyle, we hope that you will follow us, comment, offer suggestions or ask questions. Welcome to the journey!
